Lucie Russell, Fair By Design

Lucie has worked at the cutting edge of the social justice sector for 25 years. She started out as a youth worker, then qualified as a social worker and worked in children’s services for 5 years. She then went on to start The Big Issue magazine with its founder, John Bird and created The Big Issue’s charity, The Big Issue Foundation, which provides a range of support services to homeless people. She then went on to create SmartJustice, a national campaign based at the Prison Reform Trust which promoted community solutions to crime followed by becoming Campaigns and Media Director at YoungMinds, the young people’s mental health charity. Here she was responsible for the creation and development of all campaigning, communications and research. She also led a highly successful young people led campaign on the pressures young people face. She then went on to become Head of Communications and Policy at The Young Foundation. She is currently Director of the Fair By Design campaign based at the Barrow Cadbury Trust. The campaign is an influencing change programme to eliminate the poverty premium, where poor people pay more than the rest of us for essential goods and services. Lucie is a Trustee of Redthread, youth violence intervention programme, Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses, education, volunteering and wellbeing hub and a member of the London Independent Youth Safety Advisory Board.
