Tom Steinberg is Chief Digital Officer at the Big Lottery Fund and Digital Lead at the Heritage Lottery Fund. He helps both of these organisations to make great digital grants, and to offer highly usable digital services to applicants and stakeholders.
Prior to this, Tom was the founder and director of mySociety, an international social enterprise which aims to help citizens to become more powerful. Its projects include WhatDoTheyKnow.com, a website that has helped Britons to make nearly half a million Freedom of Information requests to date, and which is visited by over four million people a year. Spin-offs of this service are run by activists, journalists and campaigners in over thirty countries. It is one of several such civic technology tools that Tom helped grow whilst at mySociety, including TheyWorkForYou.com and FixMyStreet.com.
Tom is also the senior contributing editor to Civicist (a publication on civic technology), an Ashoka fellow, and a board member of the International Committee of Investigative Journalists.

Hear from some of the pioneers in grant-making and charities how that transformation is happening, and what’s changing as a result. This session will focus on concrete examples, but also explore what more needs to change to harness tech and data’s true potential.
